It was established as the ‘Tezpur Lunatic Asylum’ in 1876, and later, in 1922, it was renamed as ‘Tezpur Mental Hospital’. Since then, it has gone through many changes and has evolved to become one of India’s leading center for mental health care, research, and education.

On June 1st, 2007, it was taken over by the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It’s now known as Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health.
