Master of Philosophy or M.Phil Clinical Psychology is a 2 years hospital-based program. Basically, this course has four semesters. In order to be qualified for this course, a candidate must have completed a master’s program in Psychology/Clinical Psychology/Applied Psychology or other specializations.  Throughout this course, the student receives training in counseling skills, therapeutic techniques, psychological measurements, etc.

If we talk about the mode of completing this course, M.Phil Clinical Psychology course is only available in regular mode. Clinical Psychology course is very popular because through this course, the student can get a license from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) to start their career as a Clinical Psychologist in India.

Will M.Phil Clinical Psychology be Discontinued?

Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) in their official notification (Dated: October 15, 2020) notified that the M.Phil (Clinical Psychology) and M.Phil (Rehabilitation Psychology) programs will be continue without any change in their terminology or structure. The council has also suggested the universities to continue the M.Phil (Clinical Psychology) and M.Phil (Rehabilitation Psychology) programs.

As per the New memorandum (2023) too, M.Phil Clinical Psychology will continue. Therefore, those students who are currently pursuing M.A./M.Sc. in Psychology must enroll in M.Phil Clinical Psychology after completing their Master’s to attain an RCI license.

Difference Between M.Phil Clinical Psychology and PDCP Diploma Course

Students often have confusion with the Professional Diploma in Clinical Psychology (PDCP) and M.Phil Clinical Psychology course. The PDCP is a 1-year Professional training course in Clinical Psychology that lays emphasis on critical domains. After successfully completing this course, applicants can register with RCI as “Clinical Psychologist (Associate)” under CRR and work in service settings as an expert/specialist in non-academic service settings.

The designation of Clinical Psychologist (Associate) is a bit different from Clinical Psychologist. Clinical Psychologists are RCI-approved professionals possessing elevated proficiency and accountability across service and research domains.

The obligations of a Clinical Psychologist (Associate ) are restricted solely to deliver clinical services to individuals to handle mental health issues. They do not encompass autonomous responsibilities in academic endeavors such as instructing, training, mentoring, or overseeing students within Clinical Psychology Departments.

What is Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)?

Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is an organization, which came into existence in the year 1986. The parliament validated the act of RCI in September 1992 and this became a statutory body on June 22, 1993. The parliament of India altered that act of RCI in the year 2000. The purpose of Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is to promote research in Rehabilitation and Special Education.

The primary objective of RCI is to regulate and manage the licensing procedures in the field of Rehabilitation and Special Education which includes an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology. RCI provides the license to the institutes on the basis of the performance and quality and keeps a check on the same.

After the successful completion of the M.Phil Clinical Psychology course, RCI issues a Central Rehabilitation Register (CRR) number/license to the students which allows the students to work as Clinical Psychologists.

Eligibility Criteria for M.Phil Clinical Psychology Entrance Exam

In order to be qualified for M.Phil Clinical Psychology Entrance Exam, candidates who belong to the General Category must have at least 55% marks in their Master’s Degree in Psychology. The criteria for different categories of people like ST/SC are different.

For candidates who belong to the ST/SC category, it is mandatory to secure marks not less than 50% in the Master’s in Psychology. The criteria for being qualified for M.Phil in Clinical Psychology exam might be different in some institutes.
