We received many queries regarding the discontinuation of the M.Phil Course, students are continuously asking about the validation of the M.Phil Clinical Psychology any more after the approval of the National Education Policy.
The Government through NEP 2020 has already notified that the M.Phil Degree will not be continued from the upcoming academic years and now the UGC through its latest Ph.D. regulations 2022 which was announced on 15-11-2022 has also declared that Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer the M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) program.
Now, these statements are creating confusion for all the aspirants who are aiming for an RCI license as a Clinical Psychologist. Through this article, we have tried to explain the facts related to the ongoing debate on the discontinuation of the M.Phil Clinical Psychology.
- The RCI in their official notification (Dated: 15 October 2020) stated that the M.Phil. (Clinical Psychology) and M.Phil.(Rehabilitation Psychology) program of 02 years duration will continue without any change in its nomenclature or in structure. It was mentioned by RCI that, these are professional training programs in the area of mental health and rehabilitation, respectively, and not a pre-doctoral research academic program of one-year duration.
- In the Notification same RCI Notification, they also mentioned: “the changes in nomenclature, if any, will be intimated in due course of time by the RCI. The council has also advised the Universities to continue the M.Phil. (Clinical Psychology) and M.Phil. (Rehabilitation Psychology) program of 02 years duration as approved by the Council and award degree accordingly till such time.”
- To end this debate, the RCI in their notice also announced that the course curriculum and the structure will not be changed. However, changes in the nomenclature of the M.Phil Clinical Psychology Degree are possible. After the Latest Ph.D. Regulation which also stated HEI shall not offer the M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) program. Chances are very high that in the coming academic year, UGC and RCI will change the name of the course with a mutual understanding.
Also, the students who are currently pursuing or completed the course have no need to worry about it as all the regulations will not affect them.
